The Ithaca Creek State School library supports and encourages a love of reading for everyone. We have created a welcoming space for students and staff, and maintain resources that are relevant and accessible.

A dynamic space, it is inspiring and engaging, and we hope to extend our students' love of literature and learning with our collections of fiction and nonfiction books.

Our library is a place where every student will visit for a weekly lesson to borrow from our general collection. The collection provides the school community with access to high quality books. Students can also engage in a range of activities including games, construction, colouring or just indulging a love of reading in the quiet corner during breaktime.

Opening hours

The library is open during school hours throughout the term.

First break open to – Prep, Year 1, Year 2
Second break open to – Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6

Staff

Library Technician – Terri Bainbridge

The library is well stocked with resources to suit all student reading levels and interests. The collection is continually being updated and expanded by the library technician, Ms Terri, who works from Mondays to Thursdays.

Events

The library hosts numerous events throughout the year, including Book Week activities, author visits and Book Fairs. The library also has a large space for meetings and hosts P&C meetings and staff meeting outside school hours.  The library can be a venue for extracurricular club activities, i.e. chess, junior engineers after school hours.

The school participates every year in the Premier Reader's Challenge and their website has wonderful resource for parents who are looking for book suggestions every year.

All children are encouraged to record the books they read on the forms provided through the school newsletter and from their classroom teacher, between mid-May and mid-August. Participants who complete the challenge are awarded a certificate from the Premier.

Book Week

The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) annual Book Week celebration is held towards the end of Term 3. This is an opportunity for children and staff to celebrate the joy of reading, as well as to acknowledge its value.  Our festivities include a book-themed dress-up parade during Assembly.

Book Fair and Scholastic Book Club

Our annual Book Fair is in association with “Where The Wild Things Are" and is held in Term 3.

School Book Fairs are a treat for students and convenient for parents. Where the Wild Things Are bring a wide range of books to our school, and provide opportunities for browsing of new books before, during and after school.

Scholastic Book Club catalogues come home via students twice a year and all orders are made online via the Book Club LOOP. Deliveries will come to school and dropped off to students' classrooms.

Borrowing

tudents have the opportunity to borrow two or three books, dependant of year level, for home and class reading. The loan period is two weeks and books must be returned before more can be borrowed. Classes borrow during timetabled class borrowing sessions.

Students on Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 must have a book bag to keep books safe from liquids and dirt on the way home.

When books become overdue, parents or caregivers will receive an email with information about the outstanding titles. If books are damaged or lost, please contact the school to discuss our replacement policy.

eBooks

Reading for pleasure is widely recognised as supporting literacy across the curriculum and the extensive collection of contemporary young adult fiction and classics provides an opportunity for students to extend their reading interests. SORA allows access to eBooks from school and home for students from Year 2. The SORA app is downloaded to school devices and students can log-on to access the online library.

Donations

If you're clearing your bookshelves at home and have books to give away, we'd love the chance to have a first look at them. Those we do not keep for our collection or for Ithaca families, we routinely donate to local charities.
